Fix Internet Connection Problems
If you have ever dealt with internet connection problems, you know they can be extremely frustrating to deal with. One minute you are smoothly surfing the web, and before you know it the internet stops working for seemingly no reason at all.
Fortunately, this is a fairly common scenario and most common Internet connection problems can be easily fixed. Before they strike again, familiarize yourself with the remedies to some common connection issues.
Check Your Internet Connection
The first thing you should do when connection problems are encountered is check your internet connection.
This will tell you if your issue is something with the router, modem, or connection itself. In the lower right hand corner of your computer screen, right-click on the internet connection icon. Click on the “troubleshoot problems” option to start the troubleshooting wizard. This should let you know where your Internet connection problems are coming from.
Once problems are found, you are usually given the option to repair the connection if possible. If no problems are detected, you will know that your connection issues are coming from elsewhere.
Delete Temporary Internet Files, Cookies, and Browsing History
All computers that have internet access will accumulate temporary files and tracking cookies as time goes by. These temporary internet files and cookies are collected from each website that is visited on your computer.
When they reach high levels, these files can cause your internet connection to suffer. To take care of these issues, open Internet Explorer and click on “Tools.” Go down to “Internet Options,” then choose the option for deleting temporary files, cookies, and browsing history.
Regardless if this helps or not, you should try to delete these things . Keeping your computer free of unnecessary “buildup” can help it run properly.
Check Your Firewall and/or Antivirus Program
Sometimes firewalls and antivirus programs can prevent your computer from successfully connecting to the internet. To be sure your firewall is not the cause of connection issues, go into your firewall’s settings and make sure they are allowing access to the internet.
The same goes for your antivirus software. You will need to verify that the settings are not preventing your computer from connecting to the internet. You can also check your antivirus program by disabling it temporarily. If you are able to connect to the internet while it is disabled, you know where your issue is coming from.
If you have other electronic devices present in your home, such as baby monitors and cordless telephones, they may be the reason you are having trouble connecting or staying connected to the internet. This is because many devices operate at the same or similar frequencies to wireless devices, which can cause interference. Keep these devices as far away from your computer and router as possible to avoid any possible interference, or try to purchase devices that run at different frequencies.
Reset Modem and/or Router
Perhaps you have recently purchased a new router, or maybe your internet connection is just running slower than usual. Sometimes all you need to do is unplug your modem and router, then press the “reset” button on the back of your router. This will restore your equipment to its original factory settings, allowing you to reconfigure the router to your specifications.
Call Your Internet Service Provider
If you have tried everything and your connection problems are still not resolved, you may need to call your internet service provider (ISP). Sometimes ISP’s can connect remotely from their location to check that your equipment is functioning the way it should be.
If they are able to see a problem, they can usually help you resolve it over the phone. If not, they may be willing to give you some advice about what your next step should be.
Internet connection problems are a pain in the neck, but these common fixes should have your issues solved in no time. If none of these things seem to do any good, perhaps you have a larger problem that requires professional assistance.
